This summary examines museums located in neighborhoods where significant shares of the populations are Latino. It is part of a larger project to inform the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) as it develops a new grantmaking program aimed at supporting American Latino museums. While much of that project focused on museums in the US that promote and preserve Latino life, art, history, and culture, this summary shows that museums of all types are in neighborhoods where significant shares of the population are Latino. This summary also includes some discussion of museums in neighborhoods where significant shares of the population are Black.
It finds that 1,472 museums are located in neighborhoods where 25 percent or more of the population is Latino, and 532 are located in neighborhoods where 50 percent or more of the population is Latino. While they are concentrated in the West, Southwest, Florida, and Puerto Rico, these museums are located in communities throughout the US. The summary also finds that 1,216 museums are located in neighborhoods where 25 percent or more of the population is Black, and 503 are located in neighborhoods where 50 percent or more of the population is Black. Lastly, it finds that museums of all types are located in both sets of neighborhoods, and this range mirrors the ranges of museums overall in the US.
