The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) published a proposed rule in the Federal Register on May 10, 2019, that would prohibit “mixed-status” families—families whose members have a mix of eligible and ineligible immigration statuses—from receiving federal housing assistance. Susan J. Popkin and Martha Galvez oppose the rule because it would require families to choose between remaining with their families and keeping a roof over their head. The rule would not only result in the removal of approximately 25,000 families by HUD’s own estimates but also put undue burden on both housing authorities and residents by requiring proof of citizenship.
