The funding landscape for culturally specific museums, including those focused on Latino art, history, and culture, has historically been challenging to navigate. Available opportunities are more easily known to and accessed by mainstream institutions, which often have more resources and staff capacity with which to apply, as well as more established connections to philanthropic foundations and private donors. In this summary, we describe potential funding opportunities for Latino museums drawing on Urban’s 2023 field research to inform the development of the American Latino History and Culture program. We also offer tips on accessing these opportunities and ideas for equitable capacity building, which includes proactive outreach and robust technical assistance from funders.
