Since the US Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling against affirmative action, student body demographics have changed. Bryan J. Cook, director of higher education policy at the Urban Institute, spoke with The Baltimore Banner about applicant and enrollment shifts. According to Cook, students of color who scored well on the SAT were less likely to be enrolled in elite colleges, which, he says, is “in part because of a perception that after affirmative action [applicants of color] wouldn’t be able to get in.”
