Public housing is the oldest and largest source of permanently affordable housing in the US but is often left out of discussions on a new “social housing” system, where public and nonprofit entities develop and manage housing for Americans with low incomes. Historian Alexander von Hoffman, a senior research fellow at the Center, will present a forthcoming paper on the nearly 100-year history of public housing and its potential role in a new system.
