Following historic mass uprisings against police violence in communities of color in summer 2020, local governments across the country engaged in unprecedented conversations about how they fund public safety efforts. But municipal budgets can be complex and opaque. Using data visualization to communicate budget information can democratize public safety budget data, making it more possible for the public to shape those decisions.
Join the Urban Institute for a virtual event to hear from Community Information Now (CI:Now), ACT 4 SA in San Antonio and the Polis Center in Indianapolis about their work to create online budget visualization tools to inform police budget discussions in local communities and ground future community conversations about public safety resources in facts and data. You will also hear from Urban Institute researchers about lessons learned through this work and guidance for others interested in building public safety budget visualization tools.
